History: The Bulldogs were formed in the Summer of 2006 to join the expanding Wales Rugby League Conference and took their place in the Eastern Division alongside a number of established clubs.

The club was formed within and operates from Glan-yr-Afon Park, the home of Blackwood RFC, the Rugby Union side who play at a high standard in the 1st Division of the Welsh Rugby Union competition.

Recent years have seen the development of first class preparation, playing and clubhouse facilities at Glan-yr-Afon Park (see www.blackwoodrfc.com) through the good work of Blackwood RFC.

It was recognised that
  • the Glan-yr-Afon facilities should be put to use all year round for the encouragement and development of young rugby players throughout the locality
  • some players may have a talent for either or both rugby codes and that these talents should be developed
  • as league is a summer sport, then the two rugby codes could co-exist and be mutually beneficial to one another in the development of playing skills

With these objectives, the Bulldogs were formed.

The Bulldogs very first competitive outing in the 13-man game was at the Scott McRorie 9's Competition held at Glan-yr-Afon Park, Blackwood on 28th May 2006. The enthusiasm for the new game in Blackwood was such that the Bulldogs were able to field two 15-man squads in the tournament and managed to get both teams into the semi-finals of the main competition, beating some well established sides along the way.

As time moves on, the Bulldogs aim is to become an established club playing in the Wales Rugby League Conference, developing the skills of young players for the benefit of both League & Union codes.

Time will tell, but there is a commitment to succeed!
