BLACKWOOD BULLDOGS 10 - VALLEY COUGARS 40
A twenty eight point haul by Lee Williams was the difference in this Wales conference play-off game at Glan-yr-afon park. In a complete reversal of last weeks fixture, the Cougars completely deserved to out-play an out of sorts Bulldogs. The valley men adapted much better to the damp conditions, and were 16 points up in as many minutes. Williams, Mark Jones, and Kevin James all crossed, and Blackwood were immediately on the back foot. Blackwood finally settled down, and launched a few attacks, but excellent full-back Gareth Williams coped with every high-ball and also saved a certain try with an excellent tackle on Byron Williams. Luke Knight gave the Bulldogs a glimmer of hope, when he beat his opposing centre to score, and Paul Emmanuelli then converted. The Cougars, struck straight back, and Owen Lewis, who was running the show, at this time, created space for Lee Williams to score again under the posts. Williams completed his hat-trick with an excellent chip and chase, to give a half time score of 6-28. The Bulldogs threw everything at the Cougars at the start of the 2nd half, but a combination of poor handling and solid defence kept the Cougars line in tact. The pick of Blackwoods players Byron Williams and Mark Birkby kept going though, and finally they set up Leighton Bassett to pull a try back. The game then decended into a mid-field battle, littered with mistakes for the next 20 minutes. The Cougars were happy with this with the score so much in their favour. They then stepped up a gear, to seal the match. Williams with his 4th, and James Alan scored further tries to extend the final score to a well merited 40-10 win to the Cougars. Williams kicked his 6th goal to complete an excellent day for him. Article by Tony Evans |
